Israel is facing allegations of orchestrating a devastating attack on Hezbollah through an unconventional and lethal method—planting explosives inside pager batteries. Lebanese officials claim that Israel employed cutting-edge technology to render the explosives undetectable, leading to deadly blasts across Lebanon. This unprecedented incident marks a shift in modern warfare, where even communication devices can become lethal weapons.

Hidden Explosives Spark Deadly Blasts

Lebanese security officials disclosed that the explosives were concealed within the lithium batteries of pagers, which were detonated on September 17. Controlled tests demonstrated the catastrophic potential of these devices when they exploded, killing at least 37 people and injuring nearly 3,000, including children. “The explosive material was laced inside the lithium battery, and it was virtually undetectable,” a senior Lebanese security official told CNN. Another added, “I have never seen anything like it.”

The attacks occurred in two waves, targeting pagers first and then walkie-talkies the following day. The explosions blindsided Hezbollah, which had shifted to analog communication systems in an effort to avoid Israeli surveillance.

Israel’s Alleged Involvement: A Covert Operation

Although Israel has not officially commented on the attacks, sources suggest it was a joint operation involving Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency and its military. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant praised the “excellent achievements, together with the Shin Bet and Mossad,” seemingly acknowledging Israel’s role without explicitly confirming it.

Explosives expert Sean Moorhouse explained that only a small charge and detonator were necessary to turn pagers into weapons, making detection nearly impossible. “It had to be done in such a way to make it invisible,” he noted, highlighting the sophistication of the operation.

A Complex International Investigation

The investigation into the attacks has uncovered a tangled supply chain spanning several countries. The pagers used in the explosions were traced back to Taiwanese manufacturer Gold Apollo. However, the company denies involvement, with its chairman, Hsu Ching-Kuang, stating that a Hungarian firm, BAC Consulting, produced the pagers. Hungarian authorities, however, claim there is no evidence the pagers ever passed through Hungary.

Further investigation revealed financial links to a Bulgarian company, Norta Global Ltd, which allegedly transferred over a million euros related to the pagers. BAC Consulting’s CEO, Cristiana Bársony-Arcidiacono, distanced herself from the production, stating, “I don’t make the pagers. I am just the intermediate.”

Hezbollah’s Response and Global Reactions

In response to the attacks, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has vowed a thorough investigation, noting that many senior Hezbollah officials were targeted but managed to escape by using older pager models. “We have reached an almost certain conclusion, but we still need some time to confirm it,” Nasrallah said.

The international community has been quick to condemn the attacks. UN human rights chief Volker Türk criticized the simultaneous targeting of civilians and military personnel, calling it a violation of international law. Senior UN officials warned that this incident marks a dangerous shift in warfare, with communication devices now posing unforeseen risks.

A New Era of Warfare

Israel’s alleged use of concealed explosives within everyday communication devices signals a troubling new chapter in modern warfare. As investigations continue, the world watches with apprehension, concerned that this attack may set a precedent for more unpredictable and technologically advanced methods of violence.

With the Middle East already rife with tensions, this attack blurs the boundaries of conventional warfare, introducing new strategies that could have far-reaching consequences. Hezbollah, Lebanon, and the international community are now grappling with the implications of these events as they seek justice and answers in the wake of the devastating blasts.
