U.S. President Joe Biden directed the Pentagon to “continue its surge” of weapons to Ukraine following a massive Russian attack on Christmas Day. The strikes, which included 78 missiles and 106 drones, targeted multiple cities, causing widespread damage and injuries, particularly in Kharkiv.

Biden Condemns Russian Aggression

In a statement on Dec. 25, Biden condemned Russia’s assault and reaffirmed the United States’ unwavering support for Ukraine. “The Ukrainian people deserve to live in peace and safety,” he said, emphasizing the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s defenses.

Biden highlighted the significant military aid already provided, including hundreds of air defense missiles, with additional deliveries on the way. “The United States will continue to work tirelessly to strengthen Ukraine’s position in its defense against Russian forces,” he added.

Widespread Damage from Russian Strikes

The Christmas Day attacks left a trail of destruction across Ukraine:

  • Kharkiv: Endured “massive fire” from ballistic missiles, leaving six people injured.
  • Energy Infrastructure: Ukraine’s largest private energy company, DTEK, reported severe damage to thermal power plants, leading to emergency blackouts in several regions.

The strikes underscored the ongoing toll of the conflict, targeting both civilian and critical infrastructure during the holiday season.

U.S. and International Responses

Biden’s directive to continue weapons deliveries aligns with ongoing U.S. efforts to support Ukraine against Russian aggression. The move reflects a broader commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.

Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Ukraine peace envoy, Keith Kellogg, criticized the attacks, calling Christmas a “time of peace.” His comments suggest bipartisan condemnation of Russia’s actions, even as leadership transitions in Washington.

Strengthening Ukraine’s Defense

The latest surge in U.S. military aid aims to address Ukraine’s immediate needs for air defense systems and other critical resources. As the conflict escalates, U.S. support remains a cornerstone of Ukraine’s resistance against Russian forces.

The Christmas Day attacks on Ukraine serve as a grim reminder of the ongoing conflict and the need for sustained international support. As the U.S. continues its surge of weapons deliveries, the commitment to Ukraine’s defense underscores a united front against Russian aggression.
