First Customer for Stargate in India

OpenAI will become the inaugural customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ new data centre business, committing to 100 megawatts of capacity in India as part of the global Stargate AI infrastructure initiative, the companies announced.

Stargate is a $500 billion, multi-year effort aimed at building large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure to support both training and inference workloads. The initiative is backed by major international investors seeking to expand AI capacity worldwide.

The agreement represents a significant milestone for TCS, which last year unveiled plans to invest up to $7 billion to develop a 1 gigawatt data centre platform in India as part of a broader strategic shift.

India Emerges as AI Infrastructure Hub

The announcement underscores India’s rising importance in global AI infrastructure development. Major technology companies including Google, Amazon, Meta Platforms and Microsoft have expanded investment in Indian data centres alongside domestic conglomerates such as Reliance and the Adani Group.

The country’s large digital economy and growing AI adoption have positioned it as a key growth market for high-capacity cloud and AI systems.

Tata Group Expands AI Adoption

In a separate collaboration, Tata Group plans to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across its operations over the coming years, beginning with hundreds of thousands of employees. OpenAI is the parent company of ChatGPT.

OpenAI also noted that India now accounts for more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, reflecting strong adoption across the country.

The partnership combines infrastructure investment with enterprise AI integration, highlighting how India’s technology ecosystem is increasingly intertwined with global AI expansion strategies.
