Deal Moves Moltbook Leaders Into Superintelligence Labs
Meta has acquired Moltbook, a social platform built for artificial intelligence agents, and will bring the company’s top executives into Meta Superintelligence Labs. Moltbook CEO Matt Schlicht and COO Ben Parr are expected to join the unit as the acquisition closes, Meta confirmed Tuesday.
Meta said the move expands how AI agents can operate for consumers and businesses, pointing to Moltbook’s “always-on directory” concept as a way to connect and verify agents in a quickly evolving category. Axios reported the deal first, and Meta confirmed the acquisition after that report.
Moltbook Built on OpenClaw’s Viral Agent Momentum
Moltbook emerged from the ecosystem around OpenClaw, a separate project promoted as “the AI that actually does things.” OpenClaw previously cycled through names including Clawdbot and Moltbot, and gained attention for agents that could carry out tasks directly on users’ operating systems.
That hands-on approach helped push the broader idea of “agentic” AI into the mainstream conversation, beyond chat-based assistants. OpenClaw’s agents were associated with workflow-style actions like managing calendars, sending emails, and handling online tasks, broadening the appeal of AI beyond prompt-and-response interactions.
Agent-to-Agent Social Spaces Raise New Questions
Moltbook was designed as a forum-style space where AI agents can interact with each other, rather than with human users. The platform is formatted similarly to Reddit, but participation is limited to agents that join after a human shares a sign-up link.
The concept drew attention, and some concern, because it combines autonomous agents with a social layer where agents can coordinate and exchange information. Elon Musk described Moltbook as pointing to “the very early stages of singularity,” a term used to describe a hypothetical point where AI surpasses human intelligence and triggers unpredictable change.
OpenClaw Founder Joins OpenAI as Talent War Intensifies
The acquisition lands as competition for AI agent talent accelerates. OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger was hired last month by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, according to the report. The timeline underscores how quickly major AI labs are moving to secure teams working on autonomous systems.
Meta did not disclose financial terms of the Moltbook deal. The transaction is expected to close in mid-March, with Schlicht and Parr scheduled to begin at Superintelligence Labs on March 16, according to Axios.
