Ukrainian MP Kira Rudik has emphasized that obtaining security guarantees from NATO is critical in any proposed ceasefire with Russia. Speaking to Sky News, Rudik warned that without robust guarantees, there would be no safeguard against Russian President Vladimir Putin rearming and restarting the war.

Zelenskyy’s Proposal for NATO Involvement

The remarks came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that a ceasefire might be achievable if Ukrainian-controlled territory could be brought “under the NATO umbrella.” Zelenskyy proposed that this arrangement could allow Ukraine to negotiate diplomatically for the return of occupied territories in the future.

Rudik Expresses Skepticism

While acknowledging Zelenskyy’s efforts to find a solution, Rudik described his plans as “very vague” during an interview with Sky News presenter Jonathan Samuels.

“I understand that he’s trying to figure out what’s best for our country,” she said. “But as of right now, there are many details that have to be there for us to start considering it.”

Lessons from the Past

Rudik drew parallels to previous failed negotiations, noting that over 200 rounds of talks following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 ultimately led to the 2022 full-scale invasion.

“There is nothing that would stop them repeating this over and over again,” she said, emphasizing the need for enforceable and actionable guarantees rather than “ones that are on paper.”

Aiming for a Secure Future

Rudik highlighted the sacrifices Ukrainians are making on the frontlines, saying they are fighting to ensure that “our children will not have to fight this war again.” She reiterated the importance of robust security measures to prevent the cycle of conflict from recurring.
