Overnight strikes kill 15, injure more than 150 in Ukraine

Russian missile and drone strikes devastated parts of Kyiv overnight, killing at least 15 people and injuring 156 others, in what Ukrainian officials described as the deadliest attack on the capital in 2025. A nine-story residential building was demolished, and 30 apartments were destroyed in a single ballistic missile strike.

Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said explosions echoed across the capital for nearly nine hours. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking from the G7 summit in Canada, called the barrage “one of the most terrifying strikes” since the war began. Wednesday has been declared a day of mourning in the capital.

Russia intensifies aerial campaign amid stalled diplomacy

The attack followed the collapse of two recent rounds of peace talks. Zelenskyy was expected to meet President Donald Trump at the G7 to press for more aid, but Trump returned to Washington early due to Middle East tensions. The U.S. has yet to commit to new security guarantees or sanctions, prompting concern among European leaders and Ukrainian officials.

Russia has ramped up long-range strikes, reportedly launching over 440 drones and 32 missiles in this latest assault. The bombardment coincides with a broader Russian offensive along the eastern front, where Ukrainian forces are under-resourced. The United Nations estimates over 12,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed since the war began.

G7 leaders announce new sanctions and aid

In response, the U.K. and Canada announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s defense sector and its shadow oil fleet. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged an additional $1.4 billion in aid to Ukraine, including drones and armored vehicles. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer denied that the lack of U.S. support undermines the effectiveness of sanctions or peace efforts.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accused Moscow of showing “total disrespect” to the international community by escalating attacks during the G7 summit. Zelenskyy warned that Russia is prolonging the war because “it can afford to,” and urged global leaders not to look away.

Kyiv reels from destruction, death toll may rise

The Kyiv City Military Administration reported 27 separate strike locations across the capital. Fires broke out in several districts, and debris from intercepted drones caused additional damage. One U.S. citizen was among the dead. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said over 2,000 personnel were on-site managing rescue and recovery efforts.

Elsewhere, Russian strikes killed one person and wounded 17 in Odesa, while Ukrainian drones hit targets inside Russia. In the border village of Zvannoye, two civilians were killed by Ukrainian shelling, Russian officials said. As both sides escalate their campaigns, the prospect of meaningful diplomacy appears increasingly remote.
