SSI Recipients to Receive Two Payments in November Due to Calendar Shift

2 mins read

Millions of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive two payments in November, as the timing of December’s benefits shifts to accommodate the usual payment schedule. This adjustment is necessary because December 1 falls on a weekend, meaning payments will be distributed earlier to ensure recipients are not financially disadvantaged.

Understanding the Double Payment in November

SSI benefits are typically paid on the first of each month, supporting individuals 65 or older with low or no income, as well as younger people with physical or mental disabilities. About 7.5 million people rely on SSI each month, with the maximum benefit for individuals set at $943.

In November, recipients will receive their regular monthly payment on Friday, November 1. However, due to December 1 falling on a Sunday, the payment for that month will be made on Friday, November 29. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has explained that this timing adjustment helps ensure that beneficiaries do not have to wait beyond the first of the month for their funds.

“We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment,” the SSA noted in a blog post. The agency emphasized that this adjustment does not equate to a duplicate payment and advised recipients not to contact them about the second payment for November.

Adjustments to Social Security Payment Dates

The modified payment schedule in November is not the only adjustment beneficiaries will see this holiday season. Due to the Christmas and New Year holidays, the payment dates for some Social Security recipients will change in December. Those who receive retirement benefits and have birthdays between the 21st and 31st of any month will receive their payment a day earlier on Tuesday, December 24, instead of the usual payment date of December 25, which falls on Christmas Day.

Additionally, SSI recipients will receive another early payment on December 31, as January 1 is a federal holiday, ensuring they have access to their benefits before the start of the new year.

COLA Increase to Boost Benefits

Beneficiaries of SSI and other Social Security programs can also expect a boost to their payments starting in December 2024 or January 2025, thanks to a newly announced Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). On October 10, the SSA announced a 2.5% increase across all benefits, aimed at helping recipients keep up with living expenses, even as inflation rates have begun to ease.

“Social Security benefits and SSI payments will increase in 2025, helping tens of millions of people keep up with expenses even as inflation has started to cool,” said Martin O’Malley, commissioner of Social Security, in the announcement.

The COLA adjustment means that SSI recipients will see their increased payments starting in December, while those who receive retirement benefits will see the boost in January 2025.

What to Do if You Miss a Payment

The SSA advises all beneficiaries to allow for a three-day mailing window if they do not receive their payments on the expected dates. If the payment still does not arrive, recipients are encouraged to reach out to the SSA for assistance.
