Rivian (RIVN) is now selling its electric delivery vans to fleets of all sizes across the U.S., the company announced Monday. This move comes more than a year after ending its exclusive sales agreement with Amazon (AMZN).
Rivian Opens Van Sales to Wider Market
Known for its R1S SUV and R1T pickup, Rivian has seen growing demand for its commercial vans beyond Amazon. The company has been testing its vans with major fleet operators and refining its fleet management processes.
“These pilots have paved the way to enable Rivian to open sales further,” the company said in a statement.
Amazon Order Still on Track
Although Rivian ended its exclusive deal with Amazon in late 2023, it remains committed to fulfilling Amazon’s 100,000-van order by 2030. So far, Amazon has deployed 20,000 Rivian vans in its delivery fleet.
AT&T Among First New Buyers
After Rivian opened sales, AT&T became the first company outside Amazon to purchase vans as part of a pilot program. However, AT&T has not disclosed how many vehicles it acquired or the financial terms of the deal.
Overcoming Production Challenges
Rivian’s latest expansion follows its resolution of a component shortage that had disrupted van production, along with its SUVs and pickups.
- In Q4 2024, Rivian exceeded analysts’ delivery expectations.
- The company has been cutting costs by renegotiating supplier contracts and streamlining manufacturing.
- Rivian is working toward achieving gross profitability in the fourth quarter.
Looking Ahead: R2 SUVs and Earnings Report
Rivian is betting on its upcoming R2 SUV lineup, set to launch in 2026, as a key part of its long-term growth strategy. The company will report its fourth-quarter earnings on February 20, providing further insight into its financial health and production goals.
Conclusion
By expanding its van sales beyond Amazon, Rivian is positioning itself for broader growth in the commercial EV market. With ongoing cost-cutting efforts and a focus on fleet sales, Rivian aims to navigate the current slowdown in EV demand while maintaining its long-term ambitions.
