Workforce Reduction Follows the Cancellation of Live Service Concept

Sony’s Bend Studio, known for its first-party games, has laid off a significant portion of its workforce following the cancellation of a live service project. According to Bloomberg, approximately a third of the studio’s employees have been affected by the layoffs, though Sony has not confirmed this figure.

Statement from Sony on Bend Studio’s Future

In a statement issued to Kotaku, a Sony spokesperson explained that the company had wrapped up development on a live service concept earlier this year but ultimately decided not to proceed with the project. This decision led to the workforce reduction as the studio shifts its focus to new projects.

Strategic Changes for Long-Term Success

“As the team shifts focus to its next project, we’ve made strategic changes to better position the studio for long-term success,” the statement read. “This decision was not made lightly, and we are extremely grateful for the meaningful contributions of all those impacted.” Sony reaffirmed its confidence in Bend Studio’s future and creative direction.

Context of the Cancellation and Layoffs

The decision to cancel Bend Studio’s live service concept was announced earlier in the year, alongside a similar cancellation at Bluepoint Games. Both studios are considered highly skilled teams within PlayStation Studios, with Sony working closely with them to determine their next steps.
