Greek yogurt producer Chobani has selected the City of Rome as the site for its new 1.4 million square-foot manufacturing facility, a project expected to bring 1,000 new jobs to the region. Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed the announcement, highlighting the $1.2 billion investment as the largest in natural food manufacturing in American history.

Chobani’s Historic Investment in Upstate New York

The facility, which will be located at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park, marks a major economic boost for the region. Governor Hochul emphasized the competitive nature of the search, revealing that Chobani had been courted by other states offering attractive incentives. “They’re being recruited by other states. I have to fight back,” Hochul stated, reinforcing her commitment to keeping high-profile projects in New York.

New York State has already invested $23 million to prepare the site, ensuring it is “shovel-ready” for construction. Additionally, Oneida County has contributed $6 million to assist with site preparations, further solidifying the area’s readiness for this major development.

A Generational Win for Oneida County

“This is a generational win for Oneida County and the entire Mohawk Valley,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente, reflecting the local enthusiasm surrounding the project. The new facility is expected to provide a significant economic boost to the area, with thousands of construction jobs and long-term employment opportunities once the plant becomes operational.

Chobani’s Roots in Upstate New York

Even before becoming a household name, Chobani was producing its now-famous Greek yogurt in Upstate New York. The company currently employs nearly 1,000 people at its headquarters in South Edmeston, a rural hamlet located 30 miles south of Utica. The new manufacturing plant will strengthen Chobani’s roots in the state and contribute to its ongoing growth in the natural food sector.
