Visitors to the White House can now explore the historic residence in an entirely new way, thanks to an upgraded tour designed to offer a deeper and more engaging experience. With the addition of digital displays, touchable artifacts, and access to previously unseen rooms, the tour provides a comprehensive look at the White House’s rich history and its evolution over the years. The enhancements, developed in collaboration with The History Channel and the National Park Service, aim to create a more immersive learning environment.

A High-Tech Journey Through History

The centerpiece of the revamped White House tour is a stunning 3D rendering that showcases the various renovations and upgrades made to the building throughout its long history. Visitors can now witness how essential features like electricity and running water were introduced over time. As First Lady Jill Biden explained, “And this changes every couple seconds so that you can see all the renovations. And it lights up. So for instance—you may not have known that the White House didn’t always have water or electricity. So this tells you, you know, each thing, when it was added, who added it, the timeline. And it makes it much more interesting.”

The timeline of renovations offers a detailed, illuminated walk-through of how each presidency has left its mark on the White House, making it an educational experience for all ages.

Stepping Inside Iconic Rooms for the First Time

In addition to the digital upgrades, the White House tour now allows visitors to step inside iconic rooms that were previously off-limits. One such room is the China Room, where collections of china used by various presidencies are displayed, offering a unique look into the traditions and customs of the past. Biden remarked that this new accessibility allows for a more hands-on understanding of the White House’s historical significance.

For the first time ever, visitors can also enter the Diplomatic Reception Room, where President Franklin Roosevelt once delivered his famous fireside chats. “This is the room I added to the tour,” Biden shared, highlighting that visitors will not only see where these chats took place but will also be able to hear a recording of one of Roosevelt’s radio addresses. “You can hear his voice. You can hear one of the chats. You can see where they sat. And so this is a whole new experience,” she added.

First Lady Reflects on Stepping Away and a New Chapter

During an interview with “Good Morning America,” Jill Biden reflected on her time as first lady, noting the immense honor it has been to serve. With her role winding down, Biden expressed a sense of gratitude and optimism for the future. “I’ve had such a great four years,” she said. “And [President Joe Biden] and I, I mean really it has been the honor of our lives. It’ll be tough to maybe step away from it, but we’re starting a new chapter of our lives. A new journey.”

Acknowledging that she and her husband have been in politics for over five decades, Biden remarked, “I think we’re ready for the new journey.” She spoke candidly about their decision to step back, stating, “It’s time for something new. It was the right call.”

Looking Forward to the Future

As Americans prepare to cast their votes in the upcoming election, Biden remains hopeful about the future of the White House and its next chapter. Confident in the energy of the campaign, she believes in Vice President Kamala Harris’s chances of winning. “Kamala Harris is gonna win this, and it’s going to be just another chapter for the White House,” she expressed with optimism.

When asked about the possibility of Harris winning and Doug Emhoff becoming the first-ever first gentleman, Biden reflected on her friendship with Emhoff. She shared the advice she gave him when he first sought her guidance: “Just be yourself.”

A Legacy Rooted in Education and Democracy

For Jill Biden, education has always been her passion, and it is a central part of the legacy she hopes to leave behind. As she reflects on her time as first lady, she wants to be remembered as an educator who encouraged Americans to learn about their government and the presidency. “Education has been my life’s work, and I think for people to know me as an educator. It’s important to me that people learn about the White House, about the presidency,” she said.

Her dedication to promoting democracy and inspiring a love of learning is at the core of her mission, as she concluded, “Learn about our government and our democracy, and how blessed we are to live in America.”

The White House tour’s transformation offers visitors an enriching experience filled with digital enhancements, historical insights, and access to new rooms. As Jill Biden reflects on her tenure as first lady, she leaves behind a legacy rooted in education and a deep appreciation for the nation’s history. With an eye on the future, she remains hopeful for the next chapter, both for the White House and for her personal journey.
