U.S. stocks climbed on Wednesday as investors digested quarterly results from Morgan Stanley (MS) and others, sparking hopes of a rebound to record highs following a tech sector slump. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) gained over 300 points, or about 0.8%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) increased nearly 0.4%. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) also rose, up around 0.6% in morning trading.

The gains followed a pullback on Tuesday, when all three indices retreated from all-time highs due to concerns around the AI chip market, sparked by a downward revision in ASML’s 2025 sales forecast.

Tech and Chip Stocks Lead Market Recovery

ASML’s lowered guidance had initially dampened investor enthusiasm for AI-related stocks, sending shares of key players like Nvidia (NVDA) lower. However, on Wednesday, chip stocks staged a comeback, with Nvidia leading the charge with a 3.5% gain. The rebound helped buoy broader market sentiment, suggesting that some investors are willing to look past the near-term challenges for the sector.

The renewed optimism around tech stocks was supported by strong earnings reports from several companies, helping to offset concerns raised by ASML’s forecast.

Morgan Stanley Shines Amid Wall Street Earnings Boost

Morgan Stanley’s quarterly results, released before the market opened, contributed to the market’s positive momentum. The bank reported a jump in profits compared to the same period last year, driven by a resurgence in dealmaking activities that also benefited its peers in the financial sector. Following the earnings announcement, Morgan Stanley’s stock surged over 7%.

The robust results from Morgan Stanley add to a series of upbeat earnings reports from major Wall Street banks this week, signaling a recovery in financial markets that had been under pressure earlier in the year.

Mixed Earnings and Political Uncertainty Keep Investors Cautious

Despite the positive news from Morgan Stanley, other earnings reports have been more mixed, prompting investors to remain vigilant. ASML, UnitedHealth Group (UNH), and luxury brand LVMH (MC.PA, LVMUY) all reported disappointing results, suggesting that some areas of the market may still face challenges. This tempered the otherwise bullish sentiment on Wall Street, as investors looked for signs of softness in other sectors.

At the same time, political developments have added to market uncertainty. Fresh tariff promises from Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump have heightened concerns about the outcome of the closely contested U.S. presidential race, influencing investor behavior and market movements.

Gold Rallies as Investors Seek Safe Havens

In the commodities market, gold prices (GC=F) rallied, approaching record highs as the political climate in the U.S. added to the uncertainty. The precious metal’s gains reflect its appeal as a safe haven, especially as the possibility of new tariffs and the tight presidential race add to the volatility in equity markets.
