Meta Announces Workforce Reductions
Meta has confirmed plans to cut approximately 5% of its workforce, targeting the company’s lowest-performing employees. The move was detailed in an internal memo from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who emphasized the importance of “moving out low performers faster” as part of the company’s broader strategy to streamline operations in 2025.
The layoffs, which will affect over 3,600 employees, come after Meta implemented significant reductions in 2022 and 2023, cutting 21,000 jobs, nearly a quarter of its workforce. Affected employees will be notified by February 10 and will receive severance packages consistent with previous layoffs.
“An Intense Year Ahead”
In his memo, Zuckerberg described 2025 as “an intense year,” highlighting Meta’s focus on critical technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality glasses, and the future of social media. He outlined plans to raise the bar for performance management:
- Employees who do not meet expectations will face more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle.
- The company plans to backfill roles in 2025 to maintain key project momentum.
“We won’t manage out everyone who didn’t meet expectations for the last period if we’re optimistic about their future performance,” Zuckerberg said.
Strategic Shift in Policy and Operations
The layoffs coincide with a series of operational and policy changes at Meta aimed at aligning with the priorities of the incoming Trump administration. These include:
- Ending Third-Party Fact-Checking: Meta is replacing its fact-checking program with a “Community Notes” model, inspired by Elon Musk’s platform X, where users add context to posts.
- Focus on Free Expression: Zuckerberg announced a renewed commitment to “restoring free expression” on Meta’s platforms, describing recent political shifts as a “cultural tipping point.”
“The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards once again prioritizing speech,” Zuckerberg said in a video announcement.
Meta’s Vision for the Future
Meta is doubling down on its long-term projects, which include:
- Advancing artificial intelligence capabilities.
- Developing augmented reality glasses as the next computing platform.
- Reinventing social media to maintain its global influence.
Severance and Notification Timeline
Meta confirmed that employees affected by the layoffs will:
- Receive severance packages in line with those offered during previous workforce reductions.
- Be notified by February 10, with notifications for employees outside the U.S. potentially occurring later.
The announced layoffs are Meta’s latest step in its effort to streamline operations and focus on innovation in critical technologies. As the company adapts to a changing political and economic landscape, Zuckerberg is emphasizing efficiency and accountability as cornerstones of its strategy for 2025 and beyond.
